My Gymkhana Experience at Auto Show Kampala 2025: Precision, Preparation, and Passion

Introduction
On 12–13 July 2025, I took part in the Gymkhana event at Auto Show Kampala 2025, driving my reliable Toyota Corolla Namukadde with its original 1NZ engine. Let me walk you through my preparation, on-track performance, team support, detailed expenses, and key takeaways. Whether you’re a motorsport enthusiast, a Corolla owner, or simply curious about Gymkhana, I will share my personal experience and reflections.

What Is Gymkhana?
Gymkhana is a timed motorsport discipline that emphasises precision driving, car control, and agility rather than pure speed. Competitors navigate a defined course marked by cones, barrels, or tyres—often performing tight turns, figure eights, and 180° spins. Scoring is based on completion time plus penalties for any knocked-over obstacles or course deviations. Popular for its spectator appeal, Gymkhana tests a driver’s ability to balance speed with exacting manoeuvres in a confined layout.
Preparation & Practice
- Five Practice Sessions
- Marram Surface (3 runs): Focused on grip management and controlled drifts.
- Tarmac Surface (2 runs): Sharpened braking points, steering precision, and corner-exit speed.
- Spacing & Layout
- Used 5-metre markers purchased and measured by my co-driver.
- On event day, the wider spacing proved advantageous for cleaner lines.
- Vehicle Setup
- Suspension Tuning: Two mechanics fine-tuned shocks and sway bars for optimal balance.
- Tyre Selection: Installed two new performance tyres ahead of the competition.

Event Day Performance
- Clean Runs:
I completed every Gymkhana course without knocking over cone, tyre or drum barriers. - Minor Mistake:
One misrouted roundabout—corrected promptly—highlighting the need for continuous focus. - Helmet Incident:
Borrowed a helmet on Day 1, then acquired proper helmets for both driver and co-driver before Day 2.
Team & Support
- Co-Driver: Mukulu Ssekatawa did barrier placement, managed practice logistics, and provided in-car guidance.
- Mechanics (×2): Deo and Musiramu Handled suspension overhauls, tyre changes, and on-site repairs between runs.
- Camaraderie: Shared meals of grilled chicken and soda, fostering a positive atmosphere under high pressure.
Expense Breakdown (UGX 3,040,000)
| Item | Cost Category |
|---|---|
| Suspension work (parts & labour) | Vehicle preparation |
| Two new replacement tyres | Tyres |
| Helmets for driver & co-driver | Safety equipment |
| Lunches & daily allowances | Team welfare |
| Fuel, jerrycans, spacing markers | Consumables & logistics |
| Provision for future engine overhaul | Maintenance planning |
These expenses represent an investment in safety, performance, and team morale, essential components of any successful Gymkhana campaign.
Reflections & Key Takeaways
- Reliability over Raw Power:
My Corolla Namukadde’s steadfast 1NZ engine proved that consistent performance can outshine sheer horsepower. - Value of Practice:
Diverse surface sessions and accurate spacing drills built muscle memory for high-precision manoeuvres. - Team Dynamics:
Effective communication between I, co-driver Edwin Ssekatawa, and mechanics Musiramu and Deo is crucial under time constraints. - Safety First:
Investing in proper helmets and suspension upgrades enhanced both confidence and control.
Future Plans, also in case I am to drive again
- Engine Overhaul: Allocate a budget for a comprehensive 1NZ refresh to maintain performance.
- Advanced Training: Incorporate reaction-time drills and video analysis of each run.
- Event Goals: Aim for podium finishes in upcoming regional Gymkhana challenges.
Conclusion
My Gymkhana journey at Auto Show Kampala 2025 was a blend of meticulous preparation, teamwork, and on-track excitement. Although official scores are still pending as of 14 July 2025, the lessons learnt and the camaraderie forged make this experience invaluable. I look forward to applying these insights in future events and sharing more about my motorsport adventures.
